[Link] | Obviously, the fans are still out there! This has popped up in several places, including Whedonesque!
A couple of people have pointed out that I actually haven’t mentioned how much the owner wants for the flying ambulance. This was actually deliberate…
I am afraid that some private collector may scoop it up and stash it his garage, never to be seen again, and whatever happens to it, I want the fans to be have some sort of access. I haven’t revealed who the owner is (it’s not Scroggins Aviation, remember…), but it’s not impossible that someone else could find out. If this theoretical person knew how much was needed, he could contact the owner and make arrangements to pay for it… he might not realize that he wasn’t with the group of fans that I have described to him as being interested in the prop.
I was hoping someone would have some idea of really what to do with it… maybe get a group together to raise money and take it to Cons or something. I was also thinking about the SciFi museum, but apparently they have nowhere to store it. If some sort of fund raising group were to materialize, I would of course reveal the price… but what do you guys think? Am I being too paranoid here?
BTW I’m probably not the one to organize said group… I’d have no clue how to even begin such a task… although I’d probably try to make sure my face pops up in the documentary about the recovery efforts… heh…

But in the interests of transparency, you will eventually have to reveal the price.
I wonder if there are any UFO museums that would be interested in it. Not an ideal solution, but it's a thought anyway.

I'm not sure how to start something like this either, but with six pages of talk on the Serenity board alone, I think someone would be willing to step up and help organize. I think IrvJr already offered truck, trailer, and storage!

Dear Akin
I'm not one who could organize a group either.
I actually had in mind purchasing it myself and putting it in my back yard. This sounds like exactly what you don't want!
My only advantage would be that I'm a friendly fellow, who wouldn't mind meeting other Firefly fans and letting them come by and see it from time to time.
I actually started a fan group here, but eventually gave up due to very few people coming.
Thank you
Peter Wagner

Yeah, I think the hope is that it can be used for good, like fundraising mobile for the Red Cross. Something that can tour conventions and other places and do Good Things in the name of the Browncoats.
Actually, that was my opinion at first.. buy it and keep it in my backyard.. it would be awesome.. but then I realized that I would have to open my back yard to the thousands of fans who wanted to see it. It truely does belong in a public place.
I want to preface by stating I am in no way volunteering someone without their permission or anything, but I am pretty sure that artcat81 from the Browncoat Boards is another interested BC who might be willing to give some time towards this matter? She makes these really fantastic Serenity decals (*cough* *plug* http://www.texasartcat.com/bluesun.html *cough*) That said, I would also like to volunteer funds and time, or whatever is needed to rescuing the Ariel vehicle ... maybe you could just give us a monetary range of what is needed and after you determine who is helping you (or whoever) out, then the real cost can be shared with them that are in the know ... I am trying to deal with a cold, did that make any sense?

Will it fit on a boat trailer? It could be stored at any storage place which will accept RV's, boats, vehicles etc. Until a home is found. Is the intent to buy it and restore it? .
best option. . .an elite cadre of geeks pools their sheckles and resources to buy it, haul it off and store it. Then a longterm plan can be thought up later. i dig the idea of a fan club taking the thing to conventions once it is restored. So figure out who is really interested, who is just full of hot air.

Hi. Though I don't have the time or resources to help, I do know a few things about organizing. I am one of the people who puts on "The Signal" Firefly/Serenity Podcast.
Our approach may help you guys out as far as organizing. Those of us who were serious in our committment created and joined a Yahoo group. Yes, it would require joining yet another thing, but would certainly separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
Also, keep in mind that if you do raise PayPal funds, but the deal falls through, you'll need to 1. be able to give money back or 2. have another sanctioned use for the money (like charity or something).
Best of luck to you. If you get the logistics worked out, I'll be willing to donate a little cash.
Carolyn

I had thought about what to do with the money if enough isn't raised, and I figured it would go to Equality Now or something...
But like I siad, I'm no organizer. I'm hoping someone in the community who is will be willing to step up...

/me steps up.

Please join and/or donate! :)
I've been in contact with Akin for a couple of months now. I tracked down the company that owned the scrap yard, but ran out of luck there--none of the contact information on their website works anymore. Akin was on a trip up to Bakersfield to find some names on public record (based on some ID numbers I had found), when he got lucky and ran into one of the elusive owners.
Now I'm stepping up to help organize the rescue efforts. Please join me. To claim this piece of the 'Verse for the Browncoat community, we'll need money-raisers, researchers and contacters to find progressively more suitable homes for the Ariel Ambulance, word-spreaders, and some large, semi-muscular men and warrior women to help move it once we buy it.
